Iron and Magic (The Iron Covenant Book 1) (English Edition) Reviews
Ilona and Gordon can be counted on to write an amazing story. If you're new to them or the Kate Daniels universe: This novel centers on Hugh d'Ambray, a villain in the main Kate Daniels series and previous warlord for Roland, a godlike figure. Roland raised Hugh and trained him to be a powerful healer, magic user and fighter - but all for the purpose of making him into an efficient general. Hugh has been leading armies and slaying soldiers and civilians alike for decades; as a reward, Roland kept him immortal and gave him complete, magical clarity of purpose and total approval. The question is raised: How much free will did Hugh have throughout his life? This book starts when Roland exiles Hugh. Suddenly, Hugh can truly think for himself. Seeing what he makes of it is the best part of the book. It becomes even more fun when Hugh accepts an arranged marriage and is suddenly partnered with a woman who is interesting in her own right. With Ilona Andrews, you can usually count on multidimensional characters and clever insights into their personalities mixed with a well-paced and realistic plot. Ilona and Gordon don't care for plot holes or drama for its own sake. The plot doesn't read like they thought of something cool and shoehorned it into that direction, even though it makes no sense. Their writing is clear and vivid. Iron and Magic has all this in spades. All in all, a great novel you shouldn't miss. The typical urban fantasy cover looks kind of cheesy; if you're new to the genre, don't be misled. You get quality writing when you read Ilona Andrews. And if you're not new to Kate Daniels: I know you've read the book already. Wasn't it AWESOME? :)
Note: „Iron and Magic“ could be read as a stand-alone, but it’s a lot more fun, if you know the „Kate Daniels“ urban fantasy series (the best there is, so you should read it anyway). The book contains spoilers for „Magic Binds“.ReviewI’ll be honest: when I read that the April fool, about Hugh D‘Ambray getting his own book, assumed its own life, I was wary. I‘m not a fan of Hugh in any capacity and I was sure that he could never redeem himself.I was oh so wrong. I shouldn’t have doubted Ilona Andrews, because, just as they always do, they produced a great story - and integrated it flawlessly into the Kate-Daniels-universe. On their page, they said that if one read Kate Daniels, „Iron and Magic“ should be read after „Magic Binds“ and before „Magic Triumphs“.The plot. Hugh is a shadow of his former self, now that Roland has cut him loose. The lack of Roland’s otherworldly presence manifests as a deep void inside of Hugh that only drinking himself to oblivion makes bearable. But his men (and women) of his Order of the Iron Dogs find him. They’re obviously on their former master‘s hitlist and they need Hugh at his best to help them survive. And the other thing they need, are a base and food. This is where Elara comes in. She is the leader of a group of magic wielding people, who call her White Lady and they, in turn, are in desperate need of an army. So she and Hugh form an alliance, one that has to convince their enemies that it’s for real. So they marry on paper. And this is where the fun begins, because they hate each other’s guts and aren’t shy to show it. Things are a bit more thrilling due to the fact that only part of Elara’s magic is shown for a long time and the hints at what she is, are so immensely cool. The redemption of Hugh, if you want to call it that, is shown in a very believable way. He doesn’t become another person, but it’s reasonable that he could change in the nuances that count. There is talk about Kate and the things that happened in the past and people from the original series have cameos. Some of the things that happen, will have consequences for the final KD-book, which is why you should read „Iron and Magic“, if you read KD. „Iron and Magic“ is the first in the „The Iron Covenant“ series, and apparently continues after the end of KD. Oh and it’s more paranormal romance than strict urban fantasy, since the relationship between Elara and Hugh plays a huge role. But PNR of the best kind, so no worries, if you aren’t too much into it. There’s still a lot of great battles and banter and stuff. I’m so happy about the book that I’m going to re-read the KD series right now.
It‘s a spin off to the Kate Daniels series, quite enjoyable. I think you can read it as an entry int that universe- but when Master of The Dead, Roland, Raffael and their likes are in the background or have cameos, it’s just more fun when you’ve read the KD books before. My best off: Hugh‘s Horse- is it a unicorn? Running gagThe chemistry between Hugh and Elara was believableThe Elephant incident- how to solve a problem without resorting to violence.m, at first.Fast paced action with lots of fights and gore- but with sweet moments strewn in for people with a yearning for romance. There is a let‘s save the bad guy vibe going strong. What bugged me: it‘s a crowd pleaser, basicallly. A well done one, but the author team worked hard to gain forgiveness for Hugh’s sin.Spoiler Alert: to let Hugh pay for Auntie Bs death four times with his life was a bit obvious and overdone. But in its genre a definitely good entry!
